Jim Carlini, IT Columnist, Carlini's Comments
James Carlini is president of
Carlini & Associates, a strategic international management consulting firm that provides executive advising and expert witness services in both civil and federal court for major organizations. His experience includes being consultant to the Chicago mayor for the preliminary and conceptual design of Chicago’s 911 center as well as advising the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, AT&T, Sprint and other organizations with mission-critical networks.

Prior to establishing Carlini & Associates in 1986, Carlini was the practice area director for telecommunications and computer hardware consulting for Arthur Young. His career spans more than 25 years in various technical and managerial positions that also include central office real-time software development, telecommunications network planning and engineering and marketing management at Bell Laboratories, Motorola and Illinois Bell.

He is also an adjunct professor at Northwestern University and has taught in the executive master’s program for communication systems and strategy management as well as the undergraduate curriculum for more than 18 years. He has served as the chairman of the definitions committee for the Intelligent Building Institute in Washington, D.C. and was the former president and board member of the Chicago chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals.

Michael Rosen, Biotech Columnist, Yer Biotech Blues
Michael S. Rosen is senior vice president of new business development for the Science + Technology Group at
Forest City Enterprises, a NYSE-traded real estate development company that develops and builds bioscience parks across the U.S.

During his 32 years in the life sciences industry, he has spent 20 years in senior management positions with three major pharmaceutical companies: Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Searle/Monsanto. In this capacity, he lived and worked extensively in Asia, Latin America and Europe.

During the last 12 years, Rosen has been president and CEO of a number of European and U.S. biotech companies including DOR BioPharma (a drug/vaccine delivery company developing new cancer drugs) and its predecessor company Endorex Corporation, PharmaMar (a European biotech company) and Barbeau Pharma (a specialty pharma company).

Rosen founded his own company, Rosen Bioscience Management, to provide CEO services to university start-up companies such as Renovar (a University of Wisconsin diagnostics company developing biomarkers for kidney disease), Immune Cell Therapy (a University of Illinois-based company developing new cancer vaccines) and LCR Woundcare (a Michael Reese Hospital-based company).

Rosen is a founder and board member (and former vice chairman) of the Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization . In addition to iBIO, Rosen is a member of the board of the America-Israel Chamber of Commerce in Chicago.

He is a member of the industry advisory board for the master's in biotech program at Northwestern University. He is a professor of international management and international marketing at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.

He received his bachelor's in sociology and international relations from Beloit College and his M.B.A. in international business from the University of Miami. He has undertaken post-graduate courses at Northwestern University and Sophia University in Tokyo. He has lived in Japan, Spain, the U.K., Italy, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Jason Jacobsohn, Networking Columnist, Tech Connect
Jason Jacobsohn is a seasoned networker who believes in relationship building as a key component to business success. He enjoys helping others succeed by making introductions, planning events and sharing resources.

Michael Muth, International Columnist, Going Global
Michael Muth is managing director of
GATA, an international business development consultancy that helps technology companies build international partnerships. Muth has 14 years of experience in building international relationships with about a fifth of that time spent living and working abroad.

He serves on the boards of four non-profit associations and has spent 12 years working for high-tech firms. Muth has big-company experience with Xerox, Deutsche Bank, Siemens and AC Nielsen Marketing Research and small-business experience on his own for six years with Gata.

In the public sector, professor Muth has taught international marketing and management at Chicago State University and has worked in information technolgy business development for the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade in Chicago. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in international economics from the University of Michigan and his master of international management degree from Thunderbird, the Garvin School of International Management.

Paul Trout, Sales Columnist, Building Buy-In
Paul Trout leads the corporate division of
Akina. Akina is a consulting and training firm that helps clients improve their sales, marketing and leadership effectiveness.

Leveraging 15 years of experience within the manufacturing, high-tech, legal and professional services industries, he helps to build stronger bridges between corporate vision, marketing aspirations and sales execution by using the voice of the customer to guide his work.

John Katsantonis, Minnesota/Entertainment Technology Columnist, Raising Minnesota/The New Religion
The background of John Katsantonis as a journalist, technology marketer and musician converge in the writing, creation and promotion of content across all media. Ogan Gurel, Medical Technology Columnist, MedTech Futures
Dr. Ogan Gurel is chairman of the Aesis Group, which provides strategy consulting, market forecasting, technology assessment and investment research/due diligence services to companies and investment firms in the life sciences and health care sectors. Clients have included start-ups, hospitals, health systems, private equity firms, venture capital funds and hedge funds. He is also chief medical officer of BlueBob Analytics, which provides procedure-based financial management software and services to hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers and other provider groups. He is also an adjunct associate professor of bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Gurel was previously CEO of Duravest, which is a publicly traded Chicago investment company that initiates and develops medical technologies. Prior to Duravest, he was vice president and medical director at Sg2, which is a health care intelligence think tank and consultancy serving hospitals and health systems. Gurel’s business background also includes management consulting at Booz Allen Hamilton where he was engaged in a number of strategy projects for Fortune 500 health care and life sciences clients. He has also served as an independent consultant to several medical device firms in which he was specifically involved with European (EMEA) and FDA clinical trial development, monitoring and oversight.

Gurel has deep experience in the basic biomedical sciences and holds a bachelor’s in biochemical sciences from Harvard University. He has also been a visiting researcher at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. In addition, Gurel holds an master’s of philosophy degree in biochemistry and molecular biophysics from Columbia University. His research has been published in peer-reviewed scientific literature including the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) journal and the Journal of Molecular Biology. He has taught cellular and molecular biology, bioinformatics and mathematical modeling at a number of institutions including Harvard University, Roosevelt University and Columbia University.

On the clinical side, he earned his master’s degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. He then completed his surgical internship at Massachusetts General Hospital with a joint appointment as clinical fellow in surgery at Harvard Medical School. As a health care technology expert and futurist, Gurel has been a frequent conference speaker worldwide.
